Amorous Enemies

Heated bodies slamming
Into time; unable to understand
What to do with this strange instinct who
Overpowers them like
a brick wall of sensual force

Failing to understand
How two very odd numbers, when added
Together, become even
And change the outcome of
Their first night alone together

Determined back-and-forth bickering,
Trying to make what happens in
Their minds come into
Being, but oh it’s not easy
To make fun things happen

And as he tells her again why
Not, and she argues and they
End up alone but together as he looks at her
And discovers suddenly (maddeningly, almost) how
Much trouble infatuation is

And now, he can’t seem to not
Understand how thin her dress
Is and how her pink bra strap shows
Through and how formidable an
Enemy lust is especially
When you’re only sixteen
