Three Questions

July 17, 2011

Why did You create me?
How do I know You’re there?
Are You truly listening to my
Each and every prayer?

Why make me
If You could have formed
A perfect girl instead?
One who never lied

nor had too much pride
Who never cried
Or crouched in a lonely
Corner
Teary-eyed,

Bleary-eyed

An angel who never

Angered

Lost her temper
Or went to pout in her

room above the clouds

A perfect girl
Unbound by sin
Who’d be free
Throughout all eternity

Unlike me
For I am free
Only through
The Jesus’
Sacrifice

You could have
Brought into being
A perfect angel
A golden girl
Who would have
Sung your praises

in the past
Present

and future
She would have been
Generous,

kind,

wise
And she could
Have been

Beautiful,
Inside and

Out

She could have

Been perfect
Forever happy

And obedient
to your each

and

every
Command

You could have made an angel
So why did you make me?

I’m no angel.

Hello?

Knock, knock.
Are you home?

Hello?
God?
I turn away,

sighing

crying
And step off

Your porch.
My hands are too

dirty to touch
knock on
Your door, anyway.

If
You

are
real,

that is.

Why haven’t you answered your door?
Don’t you care?
You created me, so listen to me.

Help me.

Please.
I retrace my steps.
Knock some more.
No answer.

Again.
As I’m leaving,
the dam breaks
And I

Burst

Into

Tears
Sometimes I don’t think You’re real.
After all, what if all us humans

Just came from monkeys?
Made by monkeys

Sounds kind of weird to me
And, based on the facts,
it seems very likely

That
I

descended
from

a
monkey.
Still, I can’t see
a crowd of people
At the zoo
Worshipping monkeys
For evolving (thus creating us)
I don’t want to believe
That

You’re

not

real.
I don’t want to believe

I’m alone
In this

life.
I don’t want to believe

there
is

no

heaven
And I don’t want
To

Deal
with

People
glaring

at
me

for
questioning

the
God

I’ve
never

seen.

But, really.

If You are there
And

You
created

everything
You should be tough enough

to
deal
with
my
questions.

If You’re real, prove it.
Answer me.
Help me.

Because

I
Can’t

Deal
With

Living
Life

Alone.

Pause for a minute.
Let’s say You are there.
Why bother listening to
every man’s prayer?

Can you even hear
all those people
praying at one time?
If you can, why
Listen

to

me?
There’s so many
other things You
could do instead.
Why listen to five

year

old
me
pray for a tricycle?

Why listen to middle school me

Pray for help on a test?
Why listen to me beg for answers,

For help,
For proof of your existence.

Why listen to me

pray for
a certain guy

(one You might not even like)
to ask me out

to

the

school
dance?

You’re God.

You probably have better
things to do than

listen to my
requests, complaints, or even the “thank-you for this day”
I say every night.
So
how

do

I
know
you

are

listening?

I’m no angel.
Perhaps I’ll never know
Why

You

Made

Me.
But if I

knew everything
About you

Then
Would

You

Still

Be

God?
Besides.

The angel you could
have made

would be free from sin. . .
But she would not have

a

free will.
And one can’t really have both. . .
Without Jesus
The angel would have been
Free

From

Sin
Without

Jesus

Christ
But she’d never have

a
mind
Of

Her

Own!!!
I’ve always had

free will:
You decided to
Give
Me
the
Freedom
To
Make

My

Own

Choices.
Yet you also sent your only son to die on the cross

so through him

I may be free

from sin

Forever.
Freedom from sin plus a free will!
Now that’s something Miss Angel would never have had!!!!!

I can stand knocking

At

Your

Door
For

As

Long
As

I

Like

You’ve already answered me.

Who could make

a sunset so beautiful
It cannot be called a blessing?

What if your healing comes from

My church family
And the realization that You’re there?

Besides.
How

Can

You

Not

Be

There

If

Every
Human

Has

A

Built

In
Sense

Of

Right

And

Wrong?
And as for the facts. . .

The Bible says you formed us from the dirt.
It says there were seven days of creation.

The facts say humans evolved from monkeys.
They say the world is far to old for humans to

Have appeared in just

7

days.

But compared to You, everything is dirt.

Even monkeys.

Perhaps You made us evolve from monkeys?

After all, you can do anything.
The Bible says, “Time is nothing to God.”

Could seven days be thousands of years?
You told men what to write when you were recording creation.

You could have used metaphors.

The men could have put it in their own words.

Besides, according to Galileo, “The Bible tells us how to get to heaven, not

How

The

Heavens

Goes.”
And according to me, it’s not important

How the world was created.
What’s important is WHO.

“Dear God, thank you for this day. . . “

Are you listening to my prayers?
I think you are.
If You didn’t care enough to listen,
You
wouldn’t
have
sent
Jesus.

Besides, now that I think about it, you’ve used other people as tools to help me get through hard times.

Why did You create me?
How do I know You’re there?
Are you truly listening to my
Each and every prayer?

The author's comments:
The other day I was at a Youth Group meeting at my church, and the preacher asked the group, "If you could ask God three questions, what would they be?" Almost everyone but me answered, because if I find a question interesting, I like to think about for a while and come with an answer later. So, I ended up writing this poem, asking God three questions.

Thanks for posting, really. These are the kind of thoughts that run wild in my head when I can't sleep at night-- and they're not bad questions, either. I suppose we'll just have to see when we get up there, huh?
