"But she turned around and I love her for that because it made her so human"--Kurt Vonnegut "Slaughter House Five"

Tell me a story
Or better about you
Tell me your life
Your ups and downs
Hopes and fears
What came about
To bring out those tears
What caused you heart
To stop it's beat
What made your soul
Cold with defeat

"Tell me a story"
She asked him once
"Tell me about you
The amazing person
Hidden behind walls
The one with a heart

of ice"
He thought a moment
And took his time
Before he could answer
What she had asked
"Long ago I was better
I was carefree
To do what I wanted
To be happy, just me

And there came a friend
Who I trusted
To no end
That plucked my heart
And stabbed my back
For some untrue girl
And left me to bleed

When I though I was lost
Done for, gone
There came a person
That was there all along
And though they did
what they could
They, too, left me
And through the loneliness
I became who you see"

Tell me a story
Or better about you
Tell me your life
Your ups and downs
Hopes and fears
What came about
To bring out those tears
What caused you heart
To stop it's beat
What made your soul
Cold with defeat

And she paused for a moment
Not sure what to say
For the sadness, quite potent
She just couldn't leave it that way
She cleared her throat
Shuffled her feet
And looked up, determined
When their eyes did meet

Tell me a story
Or better about you
Tell me your life
Your ups and downs
Hopes and fears
What came about
To bring out those tears
What caused you heart
To stop it's beat
What made your soul
Cold with defeat

"It's painful, I know
When you're out
All alone
And you think that no one
Out there really cares
But remember these words
If I stay or I go
That someone, anywhere
Will always care

And you might not know it
You might not hear the words
But I promise with my heart
That somebody cares
It may be me
Or someone else
Just remember, always
You're never alone"

So, happy but startled
The boy couldn't stop
As he asked the girl
"Tell me your story
Just why do you care
Of a boy, no, a stranger
That's quiet, just there?"

And with a pondering second
The girl answered real quick
"When I look in your eyes
I don't see some quiet guy
I see the young boy
Who trusts no one
Afraid of being broken
Again and again
By a cruel unjust world
That doesn't think twice

I once had a friend
You remind me of her
Always so quiet
But I was beside her
And she would cry

and smile

and laugh
But in her eyes
She just looked so broken inside

It was my birthday
When I got the news
That she just took her life
Her last words 'I'm sorry'
Carved in by the knife
And it hurts, to this day
Knowing I was there
I just didn't help her
And then it was too late"

Tell me a story
Or better about you
Tell me your life
Your ups and downs
Hopes and fears
What came about
To bring out those tears
What caused you heart
To stop it's beat
What made your soul
Cold with defeat

The silence returned
And with a vengeance
But this time there wasn't
A thick air of sadness
There was a bitter
Sense of nostalgia
The boy simply sighed
And the girl nodded her head

"We all have our stories"
She started to say
"But all that matters
Is learning the theme

Learning

Hurting

Crying

Breaking

Healing
So we'll have a whole book
Full of our stories"

Tell me a story
Or better about you
Tell me your life
Your ups and downs
Hopes and fears
What came about
To bring out those tears
What caused you heart
To stop it's beat
What made your soul
Cold with defeat

The boy didn't quite understand
But the girl had this aura
And conviction in her form
He could only smile
And nod

Perhaps his story
Full of ups and downs
His smiles and tears
And Broken
Promises
Heart
Maybe, just maybe
Have a happy ending
After all
