In this arena are 2 gladiators
Both in trouble heavily
For this is a battle to the death
As my mind races upon clashing swords and shields a thought popsup
We are both criminals
for we also did the same thing
for does he deserve to die more than i???
Does he not have a family that he cares for heavily as i???
....( CRASH! SWING! SCRAPE! DIVE!)
A vicious look upon his face
he is willing to kill me but i not willing to kill him
why is this so?
i have a family to care for, i have a want for freedom, for we are one in the same
as i pull my sword to deflect his strike i deliver the final blow knocking his sword away from him.
i have gained the upper hand
with my sword upon his neck he tells me " go ahead and claim the sweet freedom that now shall rightfully become yours"
"but i tell him no. for he does not deserve to die more than i do"
so i lift my sword and i drop it sparing his life
"why" he asks me "why do you wish to spare the life of a convicted criminal. why do you wish to spare the life of a.........murderer?"
i say to him "because i have done the same. so why do i get to live and you die? if one of us gets a chance at freedom then shouldn't both of us?"
At that i left i left him to think about my words

this poem came to me when i came to learning about ancient civilizations in world studies and learned that they pinned criminals against each other. i thought "if one murders and so does the other then why does one live and the other die?
