All the Stars.

You swing about, on a sticky icky playground jungle gym.
Children across the way switch their languages oh so easily.
You try to catch up for a while. What are they saying, anyways?
You may never know. You don’t know. You walk away.

A lone football is thrown to friends and opponents, trying to have fun.
The football gets dizzy, your neck feels soar. Then you see.
He walks up, past all the foreign children and all the football players.
All stare at him, in pure, utter awe. Who was he? Why was he here?

Only you knew, for a tiny moment. That time made you feel
As if you were the only one, as if you could unlock the universe.
And as you enjoy this moment, this feeling, all the time behind rushes back.
Now your mind feels soar, and your mascara fears a mighty flood.

Once upon a few summers ago, you knew everything about him.
And he knew all your secrets, all your hopes, all your ambitions.
You knew each other so very well, you wanted to know more.
Like a story book you don’t let leave your gaze. What will happen next?

He opens his mouth, and painful words swirl out about the past.
He slyly mentions another girl, grins and moves on to something more.
Perhaps it was a bird who left his mouth next, or a tie, or a race.
Did he try to say hurtful things? Did he mean to hurt you?

What he thought of you had been known, previously. A while ago.
He told you briefly over some new twenty first century device.
You and he both couldn’t shut your striking eyes that night.
You felt like running a thousand miles, to no place in particular.

Your grey/green/blue eyes glared up. At the plastic stars above your head.
You had dreams once, that didn’t involve him. You’d build buildings, save lives.
Whatever it had been, you were always bound for greatness. You were bright.
You would fly, up above everybody else. You’d be famous. You’d really know it all.

His hidden brown eyes stared up at a common sky, a common moon, a common star.
He didn’t have a plan for his life, at least not an extraordinary one.
He’d find a job and find a wife and have some children and make some memories.
He was bound for nothing better, not like you were. You were bound for everything.

All of these memories begin to get messy. You cannot untangle them correctly.
All you seem to know now, is that you gave up everything for him.
And he gave up you for everything else. You don’t know where you went wrong.
He’d seemed so perfect. He’d liked you, at some point, he’d told you.

Well, I know just exactly where you went wrong. It was someplace
In between your heart and all of the stars above you.
Sometimes, perfect people don’t need others. They only need dreams and a future.
You are one of these people. You don’t need him. You need to shine.
