I held a flower in my hand
Its color made me smile
Strawberry petals and sunbeam tips
Its stem was thin and fragile

I held a flower in my hand
To feel its soft cloth skin
And wished to wrap the petals around me
To float away in the wind

I held a flower in my hand
To finger the nectar at its core
The flower showered me with its dust
Until it held no more

I held a flower in my hand
To smell its sweet perfume
Like morning air, and mother’s kiss
And its impending doom

I held a flower in my hand
To watch it wilt away
The flower died for me
And I was happy for the day.
