Harmony and Melody

June 14, 2011
Dear Melody

As your prior
friend, Harmony
I let you have your freedom for the
future.
But allow me to
capture you in the
past…

One measure
two measures
Life introduces
you to me
as my friend.

We share identical
interests.
You understand when I speak
the musical tongue.

I couldn’t ask
for something
better.
You are an angel
sent from heaven.

Five measures
six measures
We control
the musical
universe.

Our melodic
knowledge
grows
and

is

still
famished

wanting
more.

Eight measures
nine measures
Our duet morphs
into a masterpiece.
No, not just ‘a’
masterpiece
our masterpiece.

Eleven measures
twelve measures
How come you’re
ignoring
me?

How come
you won’t sit
next to me
anymore?

I’m beginning
to fear you have
something against
me.

What has repelled you
away?

Twenty measures now,
the key has changed.

But I don’t like
this key.

Our masterpiece
is falling apart.
What has happened
to the melodic
beauty we used
to have?

You say we
had no such
thing as a
masterpiece.
I know you
want me to
forget
but I don’t.

Why, Melody
did you make
matters worse
and throw away
the best thing I
possibly had?

How can your
anger, your frustration
create chaos so tense
that I can’t even
harmonize to?

You say you can
create something
better
without repetitive
assistance.

You abandoned
me in the dark
and trip me off
the high note

scaling

downward.

Time will surely
heal…

How dare you
take away our
masterpiece!

You used my talent
for your ambition!

Demon, Tyrant!
I’m furious.
You selfish
parasite.

I was your
experiment in practice
and you were
my friend.

Experimenting
is done
no harm
right?

Wrong.

I tremble with fury
and fear as you enter
my symphony
worthless intruder.

The rests are over.

I try to avoid
clashing chords
with you anytime
possible.

The smooth notes
that flow out of a flute
have now disappeared.

Those angry deep
notes bellow out
of the bell of a saxophone.

I want you
out of my sight.

Just what you wanted.

Now you leave
me alone.
I don’t need
your help.

You’ve taught me
so much in our
friendship
the only thing I
don’t want you to
teach me is how to
hate.

You’ve caused
enough trouble.

Goodbye…

Harmony
