Daddy Says Red
Lucy walks by the house
it's small and quaint
and surrounded
by a great tall wall
the color of her grandmothers red lipstick
the one she keeps in her dresser
the one Lucy isn't allowed to wear
because Daddy says it makes her look like a whore
Lucy walks by the building
where all the men go
to leer at the women
they wear the heels
tall, thin and red
Lucy isn't allowed to wear
because Daddy says they make her look like a whore
Lucy walks by the hair salon
wear the other teenage girls go
to do their hair
Teased, sprayed and dyed red
Lucy longs to do the same
but Daddy says red is the color of whores
Lucy doesn't understand her father
But she loves him
Doesn't understand his hate for red
But she loves him
Her father keeps a picture by his bed
It's of a woman with red lips and flaming red locks
Lucy loves her
Even though she's never met her
Lucy doesn't think she's a whore at all
Secretly
She thinks
Neither does her Daddy
