Desperation

The never-ending sunrise
of the ocean of the deep
protects our quiet, sacred surmise
that our souls are ours to keep
and so we turn away from night
to meet the break of day
the lesser ones escape in flight
the stronger ones will stay
we do not know quite who we are
but, rest assured, we once were good;
we watch the palm trees from afar
and we don’t know just what we should
do, to save our fleeting lives
from Armageddon, coming soon
before the end of light arrives
we gaze up to the pale gold moon
our thoughts ramble around the hills
of immortal consciousness and prayer
we don’t believe that our weak wills
are strong enough; and now we’re there
to face the fire that we fear
and run away from an unsure truth
the day that we fled from is here,
biting down like a pointed tooth
we used to be so simple and calm
once upon a long ago
we soothed our wounds with ignorance balm
and now we’ve nothing left to show
for all the days we spent alone
under the darkness of the sky
wondering, whispering, praying in tone
and asking, always, always—why?
