I never knew you
So I won't act like I did
But that doesn't change how unfair it all was
You were still a young kid
Taken from this earth
Too many breaths too soon
Leaving those who knew you best behind
Trying desperately to heal their wounds
From what I hear you had a passion
For friends, for family, for sports, for God
From what I hear, you lived a good life that put us all to shame
Making me take a step back, look at what all I have and sadly nod
I never knew you
So I won't act like I did
But that doesn't change how unfair it all was
Just know you changed my life, showing me what it really means to live

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem after a young kid in a neighboring community died suddenly. Although I never knew him, his death deeply effected me and made me see things in a different way.
