— Dr. Seuss

I started at a young age
Following the crowd
Changing everything
My clothes
My hair
My possessions
My personality
MY LIFE
To please some other being
You know what?
It’s not worth it

I believed them
When they called me
Garbage
Dumb
Worthless
Un-needed
Un-loved
To make them less insecure
About their flaws
I don’t need to listen to them
It’s not worth it

I couldn’t escape them
Every little thing they did
Made me feel smaller
And smaller
And smaller
Until I had almost nothing left,
Almost
Something,
Some small voice in my broken heart told me
Forget them
It’s not worth it

I found hope
Met people who were there the whole time
Listening
Listening to ME for once
Letting me be myself
Rather than trying to change me
Into a mass produced “Barbie Doll”
That our society calls “normal”
Or putting me down
Just to make themselves feel better
They let me be
Intelligent
Crazy
Musical
Unique
ME
I found true friends
And no matter what,
That is ALWAYS
Worth it
