Fanciful are the dreams
Of kids like us,
The flamboyance multiplies
Like snowballs rolling down a wintry slope
Attracting flakes and exploding in girth
Broadening as our imaginations
When they spill over with fantasies
Of billions and Batman and
best actor Oscars
And chillin' with Chuck E Cheese
Depicted in wide-eyed form, from
Enthusiastic descriptions of
mansion decor, to
Crayon scratchings of the pet dinosaur
They rise and fall
Like tides and children's thoughts are
wont to do
And shift and morph and somersault
Until the valiantly held crayon is suddenly
A fresh highlighter, hovering uncertainly
Over a paragraph on hedge funds
And IRAs
And pros and cons and stocks and bonds
Searching for the magic words
That unlock the golden plan
For the golden years
The mansion is still there,
A one-story place seaside,
And the dinosaur is the hair restoring cream
You saw in SkyMall
And the Joker and the Riddler
Alimony payments and phone bills
And that's why
(Insert thesis of threatening article
You read in that parenting magazine)
