I am Hope
I once had a dream
That I was flying,
While my family looked on
And laughed
I had a dream
That I soared over the mayflower,
the battle of Gettysburg,
though my voice did not reach their ears
drowned by the death cries
whipped away by the wind.
I had a dream
That I was in flight
Over the streets of the poor
Desperately searching for the one
Who could see me,
Who had not sunk into the Depression.
I had a dream
That I was airborne,
Along with the planes
Hovering over Pearl Island
That dropped their cargo
On the black dot below,
Looking like a pupil
Surrounded by blue
I had a dream
I was floating above
The larger bomb
As it plummeted down
to the city below.
This too, an island
This too, a death bed-to-be
I had a dream
That I was gliding over
the collapsing buildings,
figures leaping out the yawning windows,
momentarily silhouetted
before plunging down
down
passing through my body
as I try to catch them
‘till all I can do is pay my respects
to the families of those crumpled bodies
I once had a dream
That I was dying,
While my family looked on
And laughed
