The Hidden Love

I love you.
Oh! How those words ring!
Let me shout them;
Let me sing them;
Let me whisper them late at night!
I love you.
Have I ever told you that?
No, of course not,
Those words have never left my lips.
I was too scared,
Too frightened of what you would think.
But don’t—
Don’t make me say those words to you.
Make me carry them,
Bury them deep inside,
And hide far, far away from you.
But let it be known,
Long after we have gone,
That I love you—
Truly I do.
