Best Friends Forever

It’s funny how things change
So unexpectedly
So fast.
It’s funny how one day
One moment
Can be so perfectly normal
And the next
So far from it.

Flash back eight years
To the fourth grade.
Five people meeting
For the very first time.
Instantly connected.
Best friends forever
But hey,
Who isn’t
Back in the fourth grade?

Flash forward two years
To the sixth grade
One friend out
A new one in.
Brought together
By the thrill of middle school,
Best friends forever
But hey,
Who doesn’t say that
Back in the sixth grade?

Fast-forward two more years,
Eighth grade graduation.
This is it.
We made it.
And through it,
That must mean something
About our friendship
That it’s built to last.
Best friends forever
But hey,
How can’t we be
After middle school?

Fast-forward one more year
One more friend gone.
Down to four,
It’s high school.
Best friends forever
Who wouldn’t be
After all we’ve been through?

Flash forward senior year
The mother load
The big dog
This is our year.
After eight years of friendship
This is what we’ve been waiting for
Driving and hanging out
College applications and part-time jobs.
We’ve done it.
Eight years in
One more friend gone
And this time it’s me.
Best friends forever?
Not me.

It’s funny how things change
And how you don’t expect it.
It’s funny how similar everything can be
And then it’s torn apart.
But most of all,
It’s funny how little I care,
How relieved I am,
How free I feel,
Not to be
Best friends forever.
