“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

It must be a sin
To be a women
To be pretty
To be attacked by men
It must be a sin
To have a bad child
To be attacked by a child
To have dogs eat you away
It must be a sin
To be a mother hourly
To not complain
To be obedient
It must be a sin
To love and not be loved back
To have hope for a better future
To believe
It must be a sin

To open the gates
Try to open his eyes

Poor blind old man
Your Hell enthralled you
Your eyes closed
To life
To Heaven
To possibilities

Yet you stayed “obedient”
Through your Hell
Through your Heaven
But obedience can be a friend to bias
But it’s all right Dear John

I must be a sin
To never be loved by a Sin

We had to write a poem in school about Paradise Lost, so I came up with this poem about the character of Sin and her relationship to Milton
