Just ONCE more,

I swear.
Yes, that will do.
I think.
All dozen acorns:
Present and unmarked.
I skitter off onto the road,
picking up acorns
out of habit.
I tuck them
S a Fe L y
in my cheeks,
guarded from others.
A blinding light is in my eyes,
makes my heart thump
s p o r a d i c a l l y
but I don’t run,
yet.
Run left?

Right?
Jump?
The monster races
Overhead!
I dart out,
scurry up a tree,
acorns spilling out my cheeks.
Down below,
MY acorns-mental shriek-are
taken by other squirrels!
Thoughts race in my mind
What if …

they steal
my winter stash!
Will I starve?

Die?
Go nuts?
Leaping from the tree,
I fall
… run like mad,
poke my head down

hole.
Now,

Where

IS

that stash?
