"Following the light of the sun, we left the old world." -Christopher Columbus

"You live by what you thrill to, and there's the end of it" -D. H. Lawrence

"If you're going through hell, keep going" -Winston Churchill

Under the crushing gravity of the stars,
on the red dirt, still warm with
memories of the sun,

I can see infinity,
inhale it,
taste it on the back
of my tongue,
as I feel the weight of the sky
pressing into me.

The earth, so infantile
and insignificant, is non-dimensional
under the wonder
of the stars,
an entire race of celestial miracles
suspended at an arm’s length
and close enough to catch their
passing notice.

You’re engulfed, swallowed,
by this eternity of light
already years in the past,
coming back to teach us,
to remind us,
how singular and lowly we are,
under the weight of the Utah sky.
