The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.
-Ayn Rand

The day is waning.
It draws the sunlight away, as if from a syringe
And leaves us in limbo
Dark and cold.
Daytime fades to evening and
With it, fall to winter.

The seasons are changing, and
There’s nothing we can do to stop
The tilt of the Earth.
Nothing at all we can do
But live with it, each moment,
And hope for the best.

It seems like strange advice, I know,
Not to do anything.
Just nothing.
“What do you mean?”
You’d asked when I said, “Just don’t think.”
“How can you not?”
And I didn’t know how to answer.
“Just let it go,” I tried to say, but the words stuck.
“Just don’t. Just escape. It’s all you can do,”
And you turned your face to the water and sighed
Never replied. And I thought you were angry.
Lost or confused.
I was too absorbed to notice that you were
Thinking about not thinking
Until I caught sight of your eyes.

I don’t think you realize that
We are trying so hard
Just to be
A little bit closer to flying.
But we haven’t the wings
To do so much as lift from the face of the Earth
That binds us to so much that we can’t change
Even when we try.

Don’t think, I’d said, but I didn’t mean it.
Not really.
I don’t know what I’m supposed to mean, anymore,
Or if I ever will.
Everything is fragments, now.
And I can hardly see.
