We scale the fence,
We two,
Shimmying up like squirrels,
Throwing ourselves over,
Crashing onto the sand,
Together,
We two.
Hand in hand,
We walk toward the water,
We two,
Fingers intertwined like overgrown ivy
Ignored by a careless gardener.
At the shore’s edge we sit, we two,
And our feet plunge into the water
As a knife plunges into a heart,
Or an orange, if you’re reading this
To children.
We clink our diet coke cans,
We two,
Arms around each other,
And we watch the sun go down,
We two,
And share a hearty laugh
Because they thought the fence
Could hold us back, but we were determined,
We two.
And then a piranha bites off your toe,
And we wonder why we didn’t read the signs,
We two.
