The Summer of 2008

Let's take a walk back in time
To the place where it all began.
When love was something new and fine.
When my skin had the slight glow of a tan.
It was the summer of 2008.

Fifteen and about to take on the world,
Jobs and college at the back of my mind.
The sails of summer liberation hit the wind unfurled,
The soothing nighttime was ever so kind.
It was the summer of 2008.

Camping laced with lazy excursions on the boat.
Summer storms electrifying the night.
Wearing tiny tank tops, short shorts, and no coat!
And sleeping 'til 10 a.m. was always a delight.
It was the summer of 2008.

Indulging in ice cream, Mackinac fudge and fresh fruit,
Getting my thrills on rollercoasters, bikes, and fast cars.
Hanging out with my friends and guys who were cute.
Telling stories around the fire while gazing at the stars.
It was the summer of 2008.

My last summer with her, so tan and blonde,
Staying up late on sleepovers 'til half past two.
Swatting away bugs while fishing in the pond,
Driving a tractor before driving a car was something I knew how to do.
It was the summer of 2008.

It was the summer of 2008.
Oh, how I wish I could go back to those days.
Not caring at all about my treacherous fate
Or how my life could drastically change in so many ways.

If I had known then what I know now
Those summer memories may not have been so sweet.
But life will keep getting better somehow
With every new experience I meet.

Summer's short - you gotta make it last.
Consider everything you do something fun and great.
Leave all your bad memories in the past
And live it up until it gets too late
Like it was the summer of 2008.
