Change,
A place like a forest
Individuals

growing

conflicting

being

When I close my eyes
You and our experiences
fly away

A new beginning

arises
Only glimpses left behind
of this phase

Like pieces of

sunlight
shining behind the crowded

leaves

Change,
A place like the sea
Individuals

shifting to and fro

like waves
controlled by our many moons
controlled by you, me, them, us
But it is our minds that have

true power

When I close my eyes
I ask you to stay the same with me
Life has kept us here for just a few years
But now it is urging us to move forward

away from this simple point

in time

Change,
A place like home
Individuals

living

amongst

each other
Succeeding and failing

in an echoing pattern

When I close my eyes,
I watch you fall
and rise back up

with all your might
A repeating message
for me to do the same

Rise

Fall

Rise
But the stress I’m under

can make this hard
So all I’ve done is

Fall and stay there
Failure

Change,
It’s a person like me
you, me, them, us
Attempting to rise up

Together

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem for an English assignment that told us to write about our time in middle school and how we are feeling about beginning a new chapter in our lives. I expanded the topic to fit not only school, but also friends, family, love, and life itself. I hope that readers can relate to my feelings and realize that no matter what, we are not alone on this journey called life.
