clench your teeth
the door!
intertwine your fingers
lace up your hands

swallow your words
keep your thoughts on your lips
hold your voice in your throat
hush
my ears are closed
they’re not listening
((can’t you tell i don’t want to hear this))
my tentative feet touch carpet
tiptoe
touch the brass knob
the door

i pull it shut—hush
