Down in New Orleans
Down to New Orleans
We went
Cleaning in schools
Talking to residents
Learning about their lives
Down in New Orleans
We met a man
Dark, wrinkled skin
A welcoming smile
And a story in his heart
He spoke of harsh weather
Destroyed buildings
Panicking people
Tears shed
Loved ones... dead
Then his own dark eyes filled up
A smile appeared
In his story of darkness
He said, “but people like you came to help.”
He said…thank you
Down in New Orleans
I became a better person
Grateful, for my life
Willing, to help other people’s lives
Forever remembering this man and his story
