Poor Mary

Clothes lines strung on the tops of houses
Nothing but broken bottles to keep us out
Cemented into the wall and into my mind
Tattered clothes and dirty faces present an unforeseen smile
While the shadows give light to the burn of a cigarette
And ask questions I don’t want answered

Day after day we meet in the same place
Day after day she is there
Not knowing how unfair it is
Not knowing how bad we feel

Listening to Rush, Bill and Sean tell us to keep them out
Who are they to decide?
400 dollars a month working harder than they ever will
Who are they to Judge?

Day after day we meet in the same place
Day after day she smiles
Not knowing that the grass is greener on the other side
Not knowing how bad we feel

The fancy clothes and bow tie hide the stories
Many that are worse
But one that will not be forgotten hides under a chef’s hat
And greasy burgers with a side of fries
Why do Catsup Packets make me laugh?

Day after day we meet in the same place
Day after day we do what we can
Not knowing how lucky we are
