"Don't let your past dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you will become."

Skipping and hopping
I am so fun
Laughing and hugging
Is where I begun

Hop scotch and baby dolls
With little hats and bows
Candy canes and lullabies
And counting my little toes

1,2,3
“Mommy, I can count now!”
I would say excitedly
But I never felt as proud
As the day I learned 2+2
Because that day I learned there was more to life than just me and you

Bridges and boats
Airplanes and cars
Planets and solar systems
Even a place called mars

Then history came on the scene
We learned of George Washington
Martin Luther King
And everything in between

Everything was so exciting
Life was so great
And learning so fulfilling
Until the day I learned
Of the history of killing

Hitler and Stalin
Gave me quite a scare
With everything I learned
I became very aware

But I just kept on listening
Looking up at the stars
And watch them glistening
And forgetting the scars
Of life frightening

Learning was still fun
And easy to handle
Especially in science
Learning about Mendel
But when science spoke of disease
Only death was in my mind
So I said “Don’t, let it be me, please?”

English was there
That I had left
But reading of drinking
Bleeding, rape, and death
Got me thinking of the world
What is going on?
Why are people so mean?
And taught so wrong?

Math was all I had left
It was there
And that, I kept
But when 2+2 turned into slope
I suddenly began to lose hope

Pollution is killing the atmosphere
I listen to world
And it’s only drugs and violence that I hear
People are dying and crying
We all know about it
But no ones helping
No one’s even trying

Why is life like this?
Why can’t people be true?
When all I do is try to help,
I just get yelled at by you.

The world was once sweet and nice
Innocent and beautiful
Sugar and spice
What happened to this world I used to know?
People were nice and let it show
Now the world is ugly from head to toe

Skipping and hopping
I am so fun
Laughing and hugging
Is where I begun

Hop scotch and baby dolls
With little hats and bows
Candy canes and lullabies
And counting my little toes

What happened to that little girl?
Who knows?

The author's comments:
In writing this poem, I tried to describe the taking away of the innocence in a child. I think I was trying to show just how ugly the world can be, and that we see it more as we grow older.
