People Change

You’re just so unreliable
And I can feel the wall between us
Smacking on your gum
You smell like my best friend
Vanilla and confidence
And I want you to be the girl
You were a couple months ago
When we would smack our gum together
Ignoring these high school boys
And pretend to care about the drama

You were the only normal person I knew
And we’ve both been pulled away
And the plans you make
They almost always fall through
To the point that it’s laughable
And I just nod my head
Like of course we’ll hang on Friday
When we both know we won’t
And I don’t know if it’s intentional
Or if you really are just a flake
Either way, it’s not something I need in my life

Pretty soon we’ll be sitting with different people
And I’ll only see you at parties
And with a rush of vanilla you’ll be all over me
Saying how we need to hang out
And how much you miss me
And I’ll enthusiastically agree
When in reality, I don’t
Because if you were still my best friend
We wouldn’t be living in this fake cycle
Where your guilt pushes you back to me
And I pretend I still know you
