I never realize how generous life has been to me,
Not until the unthinkable happens.
Not until my peaceful, simple life is torn to pieces,
And I’m viciously thrown back into reality.

The world is shown to me now
Through a newborn’s eyes.
I see everything for what it really is.
Images and ideas are crisp and clear.

Now the truth comes and shakes me like a rag-doll,
Screaming at me to wake up,
To believe that what is happening is real,
Needing my attention.

This truth calls out for my help.
But I stand in fear, frozen in time,
Not knowing how to react.
I want to yell or cry.

Paralyzed, I do neither.
Instead I sit there, and listen,
And wait, and hope.

I sit, smile, comfort and cry.
I stand side by side
Through the roller-coaster that is life.
And I realize what this brutal reality has shown me.

That no matter how much I may dislike my life,
I’ve only got one to live.
I need to make sure I love it.
