quick sand

We are sinking in some sort of quicksand
It’s hot and so quickly are feet are sucked
Under
And we have no choice but to stand,
Our voices compile into screams of
Shrills and sighs,
Calls and cries.
We have no choice but to accept the fate,
Surrender to the pleasure of breathe before this
Hazard makes us
Suffocate.

I’m afraid I’ll die too late.
I’m afraid I’ll ruin my shoes before they’ve
Made they’re mark on the pavement.
I’m afraid I’ll burn my skin before it’s aged,
And my smile will turn down before
I find time to laugh.
And now my legs are inside this mess,
From the waist down I am covered in this
Earth’s poison,
And I can’t feel my thighs.

No one has the courage to look me
Straight in the eyes.
Looking down they pretend they can’t hear me
Calling out for help,
They cover their ears to keep from hearing their name
Shouted for over and over again.
They pout their lips and whistle a happy tune
About a time when buds were pink and in full bloom,
And I my lungs are in the dark now,
My heart covered along with the my whole chest.

Each breath is short and strained
My glare could puncture wounds in the toughest skin
As I curse and my voice is raspy against the humid air.
My arms are raised and flailing
In emergency,
Spelling out an SOS in
Urgency.

I’m so afraid to disappoint.
I see him look away as I go under,
My mouth filling with sand and my
Lashes sticking together sealing my eyes
Shut.
I can’t see but I know he can.
I can’t hear but I know my voice echoes in his
Head.
I can’t walk but I know he’ll stand in silence
Because he has no choice but to stand,
The memory of voices compile into screams of
Shrills and sighs,
Calls and cries.
We have no choice but to accept the fate,
Surrender to the pleasure of breathe before this
Hazard we’ve created makes
Suffocate.
And I know he’ll forgive me a little too late.
I wonder if it was worth the wait.
