I ring, I scan, I ring,
an endless count of items
that people throw in front of me.
Their apples, their peanut butter. My headache.
I bag, I bag, they leave.
A quick thanks
and off they go to their own
simple lives. As for me,
I ring, I scan, I bag,
for the never ending line
that disappears from sight
back into the bread aisle.
I hate, I hate, I hate,
last minute shoppers of
cups for parties.
My empty mind envies as
I ring, I scan, I die.
