Uniqueness is so commonplace a property of living things that there is nothing at all unique about it. — Lewis Thomas

desolation, leave me, please
let this savage torture cease
leave me and my empty shell
to slowly, slowly rot in hell

this empty hole inside of me
is where my frail heart used to be
everything it once adored
hardens and becomes a sword

it pierces through my frozen skin
burning me from there within
but i feel naught, see naught, but death
and his petrifying breath

he breathes
he seethes
vows for vengeance
on life
his wife
for her presence

but he does not understand
that without life, he’d be too bland

desolation, please remain
now i see that struggle is vain
death will always be around
and bring us deep into the ground
to sleep there, safe and sound
