Absence

I waited for you to return
The boundaries you set
My heart could still hear you
My voice still whispered your name to the darkness
Consumed by insanity
Dreams tore me apart
Your face would echo endlessly in my mind
I would close my eyes
Waiting for it to leave
For the presence of your soul
To disappear
I waited for you to return
But now I wait no more
And instead only accept
The lingering absence of your heartbeat
