Come watch the play

Who’s set, is the world around us

Come watch us, each other that is

As we’re all here, to watch each other

The rules are simple; The lines are simple

All you have to do is stick to the script.

Scene 1: The people enter, Person 2 was up all night studying for her test

Person 1: OMG you got an A!

Person 2: Yeah, I don’t know how. I didn’t even study.

We know that it isn’t the truth, but stick to the script

After all, this is a play

Scene 2: People enter, person 2 spent the past month on their project and truly like it

Person 1: Wow your project.

Person 2: I know right, it’s soooo bad; terrible

Person 1: No, no it’s great!

The play goes on. Scene after scene. Through every act

We forgot to mention, The play is titled “Reality”

It stars each and every one of us

The play goes on, day after day, with similar lines

Everyone knows the script

When their line is “It’s soooo bad”

They know what you’re line should be

But I advise you to improvise, try something new.

Because we don’t have to stick to the script

We, are free

No one will be offended

No one will be hurt

They'll be impressed to see you speak the truth

And soon they will too

After all, this is reality

The author's comments:

This piece explores the ways in which we tend to self deprecate on a daily basis. Sometimes it's to keep from “being too egotistic”, and other times its for attention. People even claim they underestimate themselves, so they don’t get disappointed when they see bad results. The worse of all is when we say something bad about ourselves and expect others to say something nice back. If we choose to talk poorly about ourselves, we cannot expect compliments and respect from others.

Instead, when you’ve worked hard on something, say that you did. Because hard work pays off most when it is recognized.
