"Irony [is] the song of a prisoner who's come to love his cage" - David Foster Wallace

Glades take hits of broken beams,

Spill dreamsense through open seams

I feel an upward motion in my chest

These refractions suspend the world in a constant buzz

Of rebounding illusions and squeezed expectations.

In a patch of sunlight I watch a lioness rise up and through the cement in the street

and fly into the unbroken air.

Cutting through empty whispers,

she multiplies out.

A horde comes from beneath

and the pack is tracing circles of dominance in the peelish blue.

Raising cubs in shaded spots of trembling lawns.

Lowering electrified paws to roofs in declarative thunder.

Soaring past blackbirds and swatting with a hind paw.

Climbing upside-down in trees and phasing through pathetic steel monuments.

I watch a pure yew berry drop to the ground, rise up, levitate

And burst in an all-consuming firework

Splattering the lioness

Covering the earth in a sea of red.

I see a lioness eat a yew berry, which travels through her

and shoots liquid tendrils through her organs to scrape at borders and find a U-turn,

waiting for a return to the center.

The sea of red rises up in a thunderous clap

And showers the world in singeing singing baptism

That wriggles into smoothies

And collapses breath into dust.

I’ve felt a cube of the neighborhood

Full of lionesses and yew berries and petty matters of utmost importance

Phase through me and emerge on the other side

With an off-color that won’t tell you anything

Other than that I have been me,

And it has been touched.

The aftertaste is a must.

While I’m out in the snow

Running face-down snow angels and dissolving into the dirt

Shooting my body to the antipode in a melting masterpiece

Explain to me your down-below,

Shivering and dotted with red cubes that shine in passionate starburst

and draw in the essence of the world and the meaning of life until we discover

A brave piece of phlegm that contains the secrets to the universe.

Love it. Is the lioness supposed to be a sort of mother figure?

Marvelous work... this manages to strike a note that is inventive and original but also deeply relatable. I love it!
