“For those of you who may not know, this is the final resting place for six members of the 1970 Thundering Herd. The plane crash that took their lives was so severe, so absolute, that their bodies were unable to be identified. So they were buried here. Together. Six players. Six teammates. Six Sons of Marshall. This is our past, gentlemen. This is where we have been. This is how we got here. This is who we are.” – Coach Jack Lengyel from “We are Marshall”

Don’t Forget

It was a tragedy
What happened
That November evening
Lives were lost
And bodies unfound
Teammates and sons and fiancées and brothers
And every hope burnt to the ground
They never flew on plains
Not if they could help it
But change of plans
At the last minute
Seventy-five people on board
Seventy-five people are dead
‘Why’
Is the only question racing through heart and head
It was more than a team
That went down that night
So did Faith in life’s flame
Will it ever reignite
Though they are gone
Doesn’t mean their spirits should be
At Marshall, football was more than sport
It was a passion, I’m sure you would agree
To be alive
A few were fortunate enough
Though sometimes
To not wonder why you weren’t there is tough
Not to bring disrespect
But to honor their earthly presence
Continue playing their passion
Start now, there’s no time like the present
The odds might not stand
In your favor
But it is not about standing
Or overcoming our waver
It’s about living
For the ones who cannot
And living in such a way
That their memory will never be forgot

“How you play today, from this moment on is how you will be remembered. This is your opportunity to rise from these ashes and grab glory. The funerals end today!” – Coach Jack Lengyel from “We are Marshall”
