Shadows

I met a man once down by the road to my own hell,
He drove a black Cadillac and its motor growled.
I was afraid in its hood a monster did dwell,
It was an asthmatic lung on wheels.

He stepped out of the car
Then he came to me
With his steel-tipped boots,
My eyes blinded with their shine,
And he leaned in real close to say
"Have you ever tasted the Devil's candy?"
An empty grin was etched across his face.

Shadows, these shadows of the past
Creep up on us but we don't even know.
I have watched them dance and I have watched them cry,
Time to release them from the soul.
Time to let them die.

A red spectrum appeared in the sky
As I sat in an abandoned bus stop.
Strange how in my dreams I thought I could fly,
But when awake I'm chained to the ground.
We are always chained to the ground.

"Hello young man", I heard them say
And I shifted my eyes from the ground to a hill beyond.
"As long as you're with us, your life will always be gray"
And I could not muster a response.

Shadows, these shadows of the past
Creep up on us but we don't even know.
I have watched them dance and I have watched them cry,
Time to release them from the soul
Time to let them die.

Let them die.
