The Invisible Circle

March 15, 2009
By Anonymous

I pace the perimeter of the play structure,
My hands, clenched uncomfortably tight into furious fists, hang stone still, clamped straight at my sides,
There's an invisible circle
Like an electric fence, it snakes its way around the innocent slides, and swings,
Separating me, from them,
The freak, from the so-called normal world,
There's an invisible circle
To any onlooker, the scene looks ordinary,
No wall, no nothing,
But I know what's there,
And so do they,
After all, they built it
There's an invisible circle
It wasn't there before,
Or maybe I was just blind to that inhumane structure,
That cruel wall of silly insecurities and fears,
The one form of segregation we still allow,
There's an invisible circle
We used to get along perfectly fine,
Then, one day, I suddenly wasn't 'cool' enough
The circle had been drawn,
I didn't belong there anymore,
There's an invisible circle
You've probably seen one before,
A simple division between the popular,
And the nerdy, geeky, dorky, dweeby not-so-popular,
Next time you see one,
Do something.
Break the invisible circle

This poem is very original...I agree with the comments on repetition...It brings me back to the years where I was bullied, makes me not ashamed of those years...Because I was "'cool' enough"!

Firstly thanks for your comment on my poem, "Mother". I really like yours, I like how you ahve taken an intangible object that is so very realistic intodays world and put it into words. Unlike some of the other commenters I also like the playground scene, it makes one think of when everybody stopped being friends and cliches start to kick in.

WOW!!! Cool poem!!! I totally disagree with "army girl". I think setting the poem in a playground signifies the immaturity of the bullies/meanies. All in all, I love it!!! Keep writing.

That is a very pleasant poem. I wish more of my students would take the time and effort to publish poems. (that is, I think you're an 8th grader at some school)

I liked how you mentioned you weren't "cool" enough, and the circle had been drawn. I also liked how you used a slight repetition.

Overall, it was pleasant to read.
