Woody

"I left my country to find a new home.
Frightened and wide-eyed I came here alone.
Woody, you gave me the comfort I needed.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"You welcomed me on that very first day.
You ran and jumped when you wanted to play.
Woody, you kept me so close by your side.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"You cam and you curled up and cuddled with me.
My bed was yours too, and my Teddy made three.
Woody, I treasured the smell of your fur.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"I came home from school just to throw you your ball.
You chased it and carried it back when I'd call.
Woody, you taught me the meaning of loyal.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"I wouldn't leave you when we'd go near or far.
You traveled to Cape Cod and Grandma's by car.
Woody, you barked like an impatient puppy.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"The most fun we had was at Wilmington Lake.
Retrievers love swimming so make no mistake,
Woody, the ducks were not safe with you there.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"The day you got sick was just like a dark night.
You acted so strange that I knew you weren't right.
Woody, you bravely held on 'til the end.
Oh, where did you go? My most golden friend.

"I pray now at night just as i go to sleep.
That the Lord will help me have your memory to keep.
Woody, I miss you; you're always around me.
Oh, have you returned? My guardian angel!

The author's comments:
My mom inspired me to write this poem about my dog, Woody. She told me to open up about my feelings and emotions about the past. Woody was my past and he wasn't considered just a dog in my home, he was part of the family and we loved him a lot. My 7th grade teacher Ms. Doherty also inspired me to publish this poem as a 7th grade assignment.
