What it must be like to be new
Fresh out of the womb
To first feel those cold hands on your skin
Like ice on sizzling coals
To hear your own voice screaming for help
Like your two seconds away from death
What it must be like to be new
Fresh out of the womb
To first smell the doctors' cologne
Stronger than expected
To first see this new world
These giant people, with these obese hands
What it must be like to be new
Fresh out of the womb
To feel nurses rap your puny body
Tight and warm in blankets like inside your mothers belly
To taste your mothers warm sweet milk for the first time
Gulping like you've been starving for days
What it must be like to be new
Fresh out of the womb
To smell your mothers natural scent for the first time
Like a mix of sweat and strawberry pie

What it must be like to be a new mom
Holding your child for the first time
To see your new born child
About the same size as your forearm
To feel his skin so soft
Like rabbits fur
What it must be like to be a new mom
Holding your child for the first time
To hear your son suck on your breast
Gulping and swallowing and gulping again
To see your child sleep in your arms after eating for an hour
The most peaceful, beautiful thing you've ever seen
What it must be like to be a new mom
Holding your child for the first time
To smell your child's poop in the air, not pleasant but true
Not only smelling the horrid gas but tasting it
To see and hear your husband cry after seeing his child for the first time
What an admirable sight, one you'd never forget

The author's comments:
I wrote this about my new baby brother. Every time we look at him it's hard believe that he's real. Watching him grow is an amazing, breath taking experience and I am very lucky to have him in my life. This poem is dedicated to Jacob and his amazing mother, Kelley.
