"The funny thing about sacrifice is that sometimes, when you think you're losing something, you're actually just passing it on to someone else."

Thinking hard day and night
About things we don't understand.
We carry out the tough actions
Of our elders' unknown plan.

We always crave acceptance.
We want to be wanted.
We beat ourselves up over mistakes
By which our dreams are haunted.

Challenges around all corners,
Everything seems so hard.
Freedoms are always taken away,
And windows are always barred.

Hair and teeth so perfect,
Blemishes never seen.
We live by these expectations
Like some sort of crazy routine.

Friend, foe family-
Everyone's got a label.
We're supposed to act maturely,
But sometimes just aren't able.

Everything is so different-
Changes inside and out.
Nobody's ever got sympathy.
They just say, "Big kids don't pout."

The author's comments:
This is a piece that thoroughly sums up the feelings that all teenagers, including myself, have experienced or will experience during these tough years of our lives. Hopefully, readers will feel as though somebody out there is listening and understanding, which is a feeling that acts as fuel for a teen's everyday functions. We have to know that we are not alone. This poem emphasizes on the challenges faced on a daily basis by the teenage population, and allows readers to relate and hopefully reach inside themselves to understand their own emotions.
