Idling

The cab rolls on into the night, and
I don’t know where Brighton is.
Tick-tick-tick, a quiet lull
Sleep is greater than urgency.

I don’t know where Brighton is.
Wiped away on the backs of hands,
A stranger in a strange land.
Adrenaline fights me.

Wiped away on the backs of hands
Are codewords, passwords, secrets.
Adrenaline fights me:
My friend today or rival?

Are codewords, passwords, secrets
The buzzing philosophies here?
My friend today or rival
Meets me at the door.

Meets me at the door.
Brave in stance, but unchallenged, sure.

Are too much for a tired girl who
Wants the cab back. We are too much.
Brave in stance, unchallenged, sure.
Fake-hardships mask lives of privilege.

Wants the cab back? We are too much
Weakness. All talk and no spit.
Fake-hardships mask lives of privilege,
We are too poor to go home.

Weakness: All talk and no spit.
The cab rolls on into the night, and
We are too poor to go home.
Tick-tick-tick. A quiet lull.
