Goodbye Mom and Dad

I grabbed my books and ran out the door,
It was just like every other day,
Walked with friends down the street,
English class was sure to be a bore.

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

We ran to class as the bell rang,
Passed notes about the prom to come,
Opened my calculus book, then closed it again,
Daydreamed of parties with our gang

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

Class, friends and laughs in the hall,
It was the same thing all morning long,
Chris and I singing horribly off key,
Counting the minutes 'til we could head to the mall.

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

Eager to talk about my dress and my date,
So happy that lunch came as we grabbed our seats
But suddenly, a sound that made my heart stop,
Two boys with faces full of hate.

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

It wasn’t real, it had to be a dream,
No one would be hurt, it was a mistake,
The boys said we had to pay,
Then a boy fell and a girl began to scream.

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

My friends and I crawled out in fear,
Was there any safe place left for us to find,
Kids were crying and hiding,
We saw the library and someone yelled, “In here.”

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

Help was the on the way whispered a girl on the floor,
The police were coming and they’d get us out,
I smiled at the girl and took her hand,
But then “get up” was shouted from the door.

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

They started shooting and didn’t care who they hit,
They shot one boy right in the head,
They wouldn’t be happy 'til we were all gone.
And I was afraid they would never quit.

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

Then, one of those monsters found my hiding place,
He grinned at me and looked right in my eyes,
“I’ve gotta question for you little girl,” he jeered,
“Do you believe in God”? he asked, while laughing in my face,

Didn’t give God a thought at all,
He was in my heart, not my head,
But he listened for my call.

I was so scared I didn’t know what to say,
Which answer should I give,
What did he want to hear,
And then suddenly, I knew the way.

Then God was my only thought at all,
He was in my heart AND my head,
And he’d heard my call.

I smiled at that boy and answered “yes I do”,
And that was the end of my life on this earth,
A second of black, then a beautiful light,
Now I’m in a place that’s wonderful and new.

Then God was my only thought at all,
He was in my heart AND my head,
And he’d heard my call.

My parents are angry and really sad,
And I wish I could take their pain away,
Tell them I’m happy and for one last time,
Say goodbye to my Mom and Dad.
