But For What
Walls of shaded
pictures,
lines of heartfelt
epiphanies;
5
I hope your soul finds its way out of this hellhole.
Perpetual lines of marching boots,
Teardrop ripples of civilian
shoes: peaceful
10
baby shoes,
sandals,
nameless oxfords--- lie
on the grass,
serene in their
15
eyes
of the storm.
Whirlwind in,
whirlwind out?
No,
20
Whirlwind stay and
fight.
But for what?
NRA card,
join the army--no!
25
Already enlisted.
A new name on an infinite cenotaph,
"David- Friend and Brother".
Folded flags,
Flowers left,
30
but never received,
hand over heart---
drum rolling.
But for how long?
No patriotic struggle for freedom,
35
No desperate strife for union,
No entrenched troops,
No rolling tanks,
No A-bombs, for order---
peace.
40
Shaded pictures,
epiphanies-
I hope your soul finds its way
out of this
hell-hole,
45
'cause your body never will.
Rows of boots---
graves,
Folded flags,
Never received,
50
hand over heart---
drum roll.
But for what?
