Counting the Titanic

1… 2… 3… 4… 5… 6…
How long would it take to count the lives?
These lives lost at sea, lost at the Titanic
A day? A week? A month or more?

7… 8… 9… 10… 11… 12…
First count the children, the futures dead at sea
The women, women and children first, so many gone
Then the men and the numbers rise like water up the bow

13… 14… 15… 16…
Maybe you can count by Class; first and second, third, then crew
Numbers rise in perfect order, showing you where priority stands
First is first, more important than you, and everyone else is just in last

17… 18… 19… 20… 1,517…
The longer it takes, the longer you count
The more of the dead of people just like you
Maybe one should count the smaller number

1… 2… 3… 4… 705…
This time first class numbers rise, and less of the rest we see
And these boats barely filled to capacity, half full and half empty
This number, so small in comparison, is the number of those who survived
