What Was Safe?

It seemed to engulf everything
The fear was so great.
Shooting, planes,
there were explosions
our home

suddenly not
home anymore
What was "safe"?

Into our midst
the Hangman came.
They gave him way
And shrank back
In alarm

They were taken away
they were all afraid
stricken with
tremendous panic

Families all around
slowly losing sanity
They were too young
to die
They were taken

Can a person
steal happiness?
What was "safe"?

When would things be
"safe" again?
I'm afraid

The author's comments:
I originally wrote this poem, "What Was Safe?", for a class. At the time we were studying the Holocaust. My poem was inspired by poems, videos, and interviews by and with people who lived during that time. My goal was to convey some of the fear and confusion that must have been felt by people during the Holocaust.
