We rather not talk about it
Because we're both afraid
At what the other will say.
You need to apologize
And I need to forgive
Before we part ways.

Both of us were silent
For different reasons
But you knew mine,
And you didn't tell me yours
Until after I opened the doors
At the wrong time.

There's a part of me
That's glad it happened
Because so many things came to light.
So many people I trusted
Turned their backs towards me
And joined your side in our fight.

This was not a fight
In the literal sense
Because no blows were exchanged
But there were tense moments
That proved to me
We were still estranged.

The pain I felt then
Still lingers today
Though I wish it would taper.
The tears I shed then
Still fall today
And blurs ink on my paper.

We both have made mistakes
And we've both paid the costs
That has driven us in debt
And the only way
For me to survive
Is to forgive and forget.

My friend and I had a falling out a few weeks before graduation and it's still awkward today. I have written more poems about the situation than I have spoken with her about it. This is one of these poems.
