Which Hunt?

Thunderous hoof beats,
Snapping twigs,
Blazing torches cast an eerie glow.

Sink or swim?

Pelting rocks,
Howling words,
Angry men hunting my dirty soul.

Sink or swim?

Tears burn,
Heart pounds,
Cold hands grasp my ankles.

Sink or swim?

Icy coolness pierces warm, soft flesh,
Shackles from another time.

Sink or swim?

Dragged from safety
To a damp, dark abyss.

Sink or swim?

Thrown in effortlessly,
Screaming for mercy,

Will I sink or swim?

This was a poem written for my poetry class. This assignment required us to pick a historical event and an unrelated metaphor, and somehow relate them. Many can see the event, but few can see the metaphor.
