The Day Before Yesterday

When I was little, when I was small,
When guilt was the silliest worry of all,
When knowing ourselves wasn’t so hard,
When our innocence wasn’t something to guard.

When the stars shone brighter than ever before,
And it never mattered what we said or wore.
As we danced in circles with our smiles white clear
A broken heart never something to fear.

The times on the playground chasing the boys,
Marrying under cherry trees with candy ring toys,
Kisses meant cooties and never occurred,
When life in itself wasn’t a blur.

When I was little, when I was small,
When guilt was the silliest worry of all,
When life was planned and not misplaced,
When people around you were never two-faced.

Barbie dolls, tea sets, teddy bear talks,
The old, musty tunes from the music box,
When the only fights happened when playthings would break,
When all the kids were themselves; no one was fake.

Fairytale dreams I wished would come true,
A promise of love that not once came through,
The man on the moon always bearing a smile,
The clouds have covered that face for a while.

When I was little, when I was small,
When guilt was the silliest worry of all,
I thought these memories would always last,
But now they’ve become part of my past.

this author really conveys the meaning of childhood in a very deep way.

I love this very much. The abilaty to rhyme and express the childhood and what has changed with age and maturity.

beautiful poem, it brings back many memories to me about my childhood One day, my friend, we'll all see the simplicity in being dirty bare-footed in the sun and secure in the knowledge of knowing exactly who we were
