Life's too short; I'm not. -Kristin Chenoweth

Faces and places stuck in a dream.
Closed to the world; blind to the eye.
Things are forgotten but never unseen.

Unwakable nightmares from the horror screen
Tags conceal and pillows muffle cries
Faces and places stuck in a dream.

Relentless, the soulless give no reprieve.
Hungry throats, years too dry.
Things are forgotten but never unseen.

A heart that pumps venom, or so it would seem
Hands thin and shaking, too tired to try.
Faces and places stuck in a dream.

Where have all the angels been?
Wrists scored. Bones broken. Hands tied.
Things are forgotten but never unseen.

Broken minds with no means,
What they cannot answer is "Why?"
Faces and places stuck in a dream.
Things are forgotten but never unseen.

A villanelle addressing child abuse from the perspective of a judge in a court room. Particularly, this poem was written in spite towards not only the abusers, but also the bystanders who witness the signs but do nothing.
