The First Trial of Job

Enter Satan:

I have come hither
“From going to and fro”.
And I have come nigh because
You did spake his name.
Now I seek the man from Uz.
The blameless and upright,
Though wealthy as can be.
The one that stays in the light.
Let us see if he fears
The great and mighty God…
When all he owns, are tears.

Behold, God agreed
With the Devil’s evil plead.
Now Job alone is blatant
In the fiendish hand of Satan.
His wrath will come straight in.

Scene Change to Uz, enter the messenger:

“The fire of God is fallen
It stuck down from Heaven.
It burned up ev’ry bone.
Your children now unknown.
I only am escaped alone.”

At this Job arose
He tore his robe in two,
And then his head he shaved,
Then collapsed on the ground.
But still the man was saved.
He worshiped God and prayed
“You give and take away,
And thro all I have stayed.
Let all that I have stored
Fall and fade to dust.
Still blessed is the Lord.”
